I just had lunch with a recruiter friend of mine and she was sharing stories of people she works with that aren’t making themselves as useful at work. Here’s the deal – everyone knows when you aren’t busy at work. You aren’t fooling anyone and it probably doesn’t feel good to you when you have to go in to work and pretend to be busy.
I know it can seem foolish to go around and ask for work (basically announcing to the world that you need more to do, thus perhaps seeming like you aren’t needed). You may have a point – I would be careful on how you handle this. Try volunteering for extra projects you hear about rather than blatently asking for anything to do. Keep your ear to the ground for those opportunties. Ask your colleagues what they are working on.
The more you help others and the more you are the first to pitch in, the more valued and appreciated you will be.
It’s a good way to stay off the lay off list as long as possible!
